Its hard to believe that its been ten years since Mortal Kombat X was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Mortal Kombat X was one of the most popular fighting games of the 2010’s decade and is considered on of most successful installments within its own franchise. Mortal Kombat X had everything a fan could ask for a great storyline, top notch voice acting, blood & gore, explicit dialogue along with a high replay value. The story for Mortal Kombat X reintroduces Shinnok from Mortal Kombat 4 as the main antagionist following the demise of Shao Kahn years earlier in Mortal Kombat IX. Mortal Kombat X was memorable because it saw the introduction of various new characters including the main protagonist Cassie Cage along with Jacqui Briggs, Erron Black, Kortal Khan, D’Vorah, Kung Jin and Takeda. Mortal Kombat X also saw the return of many other popular characters from previous entries like Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Sonya, Kitana, Johnny Cage, Jax, Jade, Raiden and many others. Mortal Kombat X also had a variety of different game modes including Story, Faction Wars, Krypt, Test Your Might, Training, Local Multiplayer along with online gameplay. One of the things that made Mortal Kombat X stand out from its 2011 predecessor was the fact that it had a darker atmosphere.

The reason why NetherRealm Studios decided to make MKX darker than MKIX was because it was a retelling of the story in Mortal Kombat 4 from ’97 which was very dark. In Mortal Kombat X Shinnok and his army of NetherRealm demons along with revived fighters from the EarthRealm who were killed during Shao Khan’s invasion posed as a deadly threat to Earth itself. Seeing characters like Liu Kang & Kitana reanimated fighting on the dark side was very interesting along with Dark Raiden after he kills Shinnok and is eventually corrupted by his amulet. The story in Mortal Kombat X consisted of twelve different chapters and had some of the coolest cutscenes you will see in any fighting game from the 10’s decade. Since its release Mortal Kombat X managed to reach at least 12 million copies in commercial sales. In fact, Mortal Kombat X is one of the best selling entries within its own franchise behind MK11 from 2019. Its hard to believe that a Mortal Kombat game published by Warner Bros Entertainment ten years ago dwarfs MK1 from 2023 in terms popularity. Mortal Kombat X is still a fighting game that is worth playing 2025 mainly because it had stood the test of time within the past decade.
