Tekken 2 is considered to be one of the most iconic arcade fighting games of the 90s. Tekken 2 was released back in ’95 arcade centers back in ’95 before being ported to the PS1 the following year. Tekken 2 came after the original entry within the series that appeared in arcade centers in ’94. Tekken 2 was better than its prequel in almost every way possible. The gameplay, graphics, soundtrack for Tekken 2 were better than that of the original game. Tekken 2 had around 25 playable characters and had a total of ten stages for the arcade mode where the final boss was Kazyua in his Devil form. While each character in Tekken 2 had cinematic endings after completing the arcade mode the game itself was not necessarily story driven like today’s fighting titles.

The reason why Tekken 2 was such a big deal was because it served as a prelude to Tekken 3 which is arguably one of the most popular 3D fighting games of all-time. While Tekken 2 lacked variety in terms of offline game modes in comparison to its sequel it still featured the likes Versus, Training and Team Battle. Tekken 2 was far better than the Virtua Fighter games from the 90’s and ended up selling around 5.7 million copies worldwide on the original PlayStation console. Its a shame that Tekken 2 never got remastered or received an official remake because the stage designs and the soundtracks for that game were legendary. Even though, the graphics for Tekken 2 has aged like milk within the past 30 years its still a fun 3D game to play today. Tekken 2 was not necessarily a beginner friendly fighting game but it did feature a command list to how players how to execute different characters moves and combos. The difficulty in arcade mode for Tekken 2 seemed fair and would only begin to increase as you got towards the end which is generally expected in arcade fighting games. Tekken 2 was a game where the gimmicks of the each character mattered more from the way they look to their theme songs along with their stage designs. Most Tekken games following T2 & T3 seem bland and boring in terms of soundtracks but they are more story driven and have better graphics. Tekken 2 is a game that could easily be in anyone’s top ten in terms of best 3D fighting games of the 90’s.
