Its hard to believe that the Nintendo Switch console came out seven years ago back in 2017. Since its release the Switch has easily become one of Nintendo’s most successful game systems of all-time. The Switch console has managed to surpass 141 million copies in sales and the world is waiting for Nintendo to release their next generation game system. Despite, the great year Nintendo had in 2023 following the success of games like The Legend Zelda: Echoes of Time it seems like the company’s profits have recently plunged. It has been reported by CNBC that Nintendo’s profits had plummeted at least 55% following the end of the company’s first fiscal quarter back on June 30th. Its not too surprising considering that fact that Nintendo Switch kinda old now and that some of the consoles games came out between 2017-2020. The best selling game on the Switch is Mario Kart 8: Deluxe which was released back in 2017. It seems like the Switch console had reached it peak in popularity and mainstream appeal during the late 10’s. There are games from ’17-’19 like Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that appeal far more to casuals than some of the more recent Switch titles from 2020-2024. Nintendo has pretty high expectations in relation to the Switch console as they expect to sell more than 13 million units of the console within this period. According to Nintendo’s fiscal first quarter earnings they earned more than 246 billion Japanese yen which was below their intended goal of over 289 billion Japanese yen. The decrease in gaming revenue for Nintendo is not too surprising since the Switch console has seemingly become stale. Also, some of Nintendo’s most highly anticipated games like Metroid Prime 4 and Mario Kart 9 has not been released yet. It will be interesting to see how well the Switch console does in terms of revenue and sales between now along the rest of 2025.

One response to “Nintendo profits plunge more than 50%?”

  1. Hopefully Nintendo’s next console is more powerful than the base PlayStation 4 and base Xbox One, which came out 11 years ago with those awful AMD Jaguar Cores. GameCube, Wii, Wii U, DS, 3DS, and base Switch games need to be playable in some form (along with the obvious NES, SNES, N64, GB/GBC games), and the first five generations of Pokémon definitely need to be on their service.
