It seems like Square Enix has been struggling a lot financially within the past year. It was reported back in Fall 2023 that Square Enix reportedly lost $2 billion due to the commercial failure of some of their top video games from this past year. While 2023 was a very competitive year in gaming companies like Nintendo were able to shine with games like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Bros. Wonder along with the Super Mario RPG Remake. Square Enix’s game have been unable to appeal to the casual audience and it seems like making titles like Final Fantasy XVI was not a good move on their part. The landscape of gaming has become so competitive to a point where Microsoft is likely to drop out of the console wars altogether. Square Enix has been becoming more irrelevant as time passes and they may have to collaborate more with other video game entities in the future in order to make a profit. The history between Square Enix and Nintendo is well documented and both companies have a better relationship now than they did following their fallout during the mid 90’s. Square Enix got lucky with Final Fantasy VII because of how successful the game became following its ’97 release for the PS1.

However, the Final Fantasy series is something that casuals do not care about anymore because there are tons of high profile RPG’s today that are so much better. Nintendo and Square Enix made a great team during the SNES era of the early 90’s with classics like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Romancing Saga, Final Fantasy IV and more. A working relationship with Nintendo is something that Square Enix could benefit from opposed to taking the risk of going out of business. While Final Fantasy VII: Remake from 2020 was a commercial success it seems like FFVII: Rebirth from February 2024 is struggling similar to that of FFXVI. As legendary as the Final Fantasy franchise is Square Enix cannot live off remaking the classics forever. While Nintendo has not expressed any desire the acquire Square Enix in the future its something that could be beneficial to both companies in the long run. Appealing to children and teenagers is something Square Enix was great at back in the 90’s and its something that Nintendo has been doing for over the past 30 years.
