Its been 25 years since WCW Mayhem was released back in ’99 for the PS1 along with Nintendo 64. The name for WCW Mayhem was based of the PPV which also premiered that same year and was published by Electronic Arts. WCW Mayhem was one of the few decent video games that World Championship Wrestling had following WCW/nWo Revenge for the N64. WCW Mayhem had a star-studded roster with more than 50 wrestlers including the likes of Goldberg, Sting, Hollywood Hogan, Kevin Nash, Lex Luger, Scott Hall, DDP and more. The gameplay was more slow paced than the likes of the WCW Nitro and Thunder games but the graphics looked great by ’99 standards. Also, WCW Mayhem allowed players to brawl into backstage areas which was the biggest attraction that the game had. WCW Mayhem was quite possibly the first pro wrestling game to feature backstage brawls which is something THQ ended adding to WWF games during the early 2000’s with the Smackdown titles.

WCW Mayhem also had game modes including, Quick Start, Main Event, Create-A-Wrestler along with Quest For The Best. The Quest For The Best Mode allowed players to compete for multiple championships including World, U.S., Television and Tag-Team through a series of contender matches. WCW Mayhem also had a Pay Per View mode where players could enter codes announced on WCW television of unlock match cards used in actual PPV’s in real-life. WCW Mayhem was head and shoulders a far superior video game than its 2000 successor WCW Backstage Assault; which is quite possibly one of the worst pro wrestling games of all-time. As good as WCW Mayhem was in ’99 the game was not one the same level as THQ’s WrestleMania 2000 title which appeared exclusively for the N64 in Fall 1999. Unfortunately, WCW Mayhem was the last good video game in relation to World Championship Wrestling but still leaves fond memories in the minds of many who were fans of the organization before it went out of business in 2001.
