Its hard to believe that its been at least 25 years since WCW Thunder was released for the PS1. WCW Thunder was a pro wrestling television show that began in ’98 with the video game being released the following year in 1999. The WCW Thunder game was pretty much the sequel to the critically acclaimed WCW Nitro game that was released in 1999. This game featured some of the biggest starts in WCW back in the late 90’s including Goldberg, Sting, Hollywood Hogan, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Randy Savage, DDP, Chris Jericho, Bret Hart The Giant and more. The game featured different match types including Exhibition, Versus, Battle Royal, Tag-Team along with Cage Match which was brand new. WCW Thunder also gave players the option of competing for the World, U.S. or Television titles. The gameplay for WCW Thunder was very similar to the Nitro where characters had their signature moves along with one finisher.

Players could only hit their finishing move when opponents health bar was red and could even have other wrestlers interference in single matches. Each wrestler on the roster belonged to different groups including WCW, nWo Hollywood, nWo Wolfpack, Four Horseman and Raven’s Flock. WCW Thunder allowed players to use random weapons during matches and similar to WCW Nitro most of the characters had pre-match mini rants that you could listen to before you select them. In terms of quality WCW Thunder was a decent game for its time but also far from the best pro wrestling title ever made. There were titles like WCW vs nWo: World Tour along with WCW/nWo Revenge which were far more superior than WCW Thunder in terms of quality. It should be noted that 1999 was arguably the year where WCW really started going downhill as a company and some would argue that the Thunder game reflected the state of the organization at that time. Despite, not being one of the greatest pro wrestling video games of all-time it was still fun to play from time to time during the PS1 era between ’99-’00.
