The original Fable game from 2004 is considered a classic because it was one of those titles helped propel the popularity of 3D action role-playing games in general. Fable developed by Big Blue Box Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios and was released for Xbox. One of the reasons why the original Fable game was a big deal was because it came out during a time where Microsoft’s first Xbox console was around the pinnacle of its popularity. The PlayStation 2 nor GameCube had a action role-playing video games like Fable. The PS2 had games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Metal Gear Solid 3, Gran Turismo 4, Def Jam: Fight For NY and others which were considered to be action-adventure, racing, fighting or stealth games. The PS2 did not have too many high profile action RPG’s like Fable a game that had solid story with multiple endings. The choices that players made throughout Fable affected the world around them along with their appearance which was one of the more intriguing aspects of the game.

The story for that game was dark considering the fact that the main character’s family got killed by bandits before training to become a hero. The moral choice system in Fable was quite possibly one of the most innovative features to be introduced in a 3D action role-playing game. The original Fable had a nice blend of both fantasy and reality which showed players the consequences of their actions in the form of appearances. There are many who would argue that Fable provided players with a better gameplay experience than games like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess from 2006 which is somewhat overrated. The Fable series had three main installments which came out between ’04-’10 and the original game was probably the second best entry within the franchise. The Fable Anniversary game which released back in ’14 was something that many people had great memories of and its still on of the best action role-playing games from that particular year.

One response to “Fable- 20 Years Later”

  1. Definitely a flawed game but ultimately fun to play. Now if only Team Xbox and its developers can get their act together to ensure the new Fable game will be enjoyable and live up to gamers’ expectations.
