Its hard to believe that Sony’s had released their very first portable game system 20 years ago. In December 2004 the PlayStation Portable was released in Japan before coming to countries like America in early 2005. The reason why the PlayStation Portable was such as big deal following its release was because it gave Nintendo more competition in relation to handheld gaming. During the mid 2000’s handheld systems like Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS had dominated the scene giving consumers an alternative if they choose not to play GameCube or Nintendo Wii. The PlayStation Portable allowed players to store all of their information on Memory Sticks which had to be purchased separately. Also, the PlayStation Portable also allowed people to connect to the internet through Wi-Fi connection. In terms of quality, display and features the PSP was far better than Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS. However, the PlayStation Portable catered more towards adults than it did a general audience which is why it did not sell nearly as much as Nintendo DS.

The PlayStation Portable had managed to sell over 80 million units during its decade long lifespan between 2004-2014. Despite, its success the PlayStation Portable did not have too many memorable video games aside from Grand Theft Auto: Liberty Stories. However, the PlayStation Portable allowed games like Monster Hunter Portable 3rd to shine and it played somewhat of a role in helping the franchise become more popular during the 2010’s. The PlayStation Portable was ended up being better in terms of quality than almost anything handheld system Nintendo had released in the 2000’s or early 2010’s and many people kinda took it for granted. There were not many high profile Sony’s titles that shined on the PSP and it ended up being a platform where third party games stood out more. RockStar Games, Square Enix and Capcom had more memorable titles on the PSP than Sony did and that was somewhat of an issue.

One response to “PlayStation Portable- 20 Years Later”

  1. I remember a few gamers anticipating the PSP to revolutionize handheld gaming. Of course, that was before the advent of smartphones. PSP sold a lot in terms of hardware but was not too successful with regards to software sales.
