Final Fantasy VI is quite possibly one of the most overlooked installments within its own franchise. Not only was FFVI the final 2D installment within its series but it was the game that preceded the legendary Final Fantasy VII game from 1997. Final Fantasy VI was released for Super Nintendo in ’94 and that was far better than FFV in terms of quality. The key features of Final Fantasy VI included its in-depth storytelling, alluring graphics and its steampunk setting which deviated from the usual medieval theme used in other installments. The story involving Terra’s feud with the Empire, Emperor Gestahl and Kefka Palazzo was quite possibly one of the best in the history of the Final Fantasy franchise. Final Fantasy VI was also a commercial success and managed to sell more than 3.4 million copies worldwide on the SNES console.

Final Fantasy VI outsold the likes of FFV, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest VI and Chrono Trigger from ’94 onwards. Even though, Final Fantasy VI has been ported on other game systems like PS1, PS4, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo Switch it never received a 3D Remake. A re-imaging of Final Fantasy VI would probably sell more than Square Enix’s FFXVI game which came out in 2023. It seems like Square Enix’s older video games from the 90’s & 2000’s tend to get more mainstream attention because of how popular they were back in the day. Also, a 3D Remake of Final Fantasy VI could potentially bring back lapsed fans of the series back when appealed more to casuals opposed to a niche audience. Final Fantasy VI was quite possibly one the best 16-bit JRPG’s of its era something special should be done with it; especially considering the fact that 2024 marks the 30 year anniversary of FFVI.
