The Tekken series is considered to be one of the most legendary video game series of all-time and has been around for 30 years. The first trilogy of Tekken games came out between ’94-’98 and overshadowed the likes of the Virtua FIghter and Mortal Kombat series towards the late 90’s. During the 2000’s the Tekken series was not quite as popular as it was during the late 90’s mainly because the fighting genre had declined in popularity. The Tekken 4 game from ’01 seemed bland in comparison to other entries within the the series and Tekken 6 just felt like another fighting title because the story was not as compelling as other entries within the series. Tekken 5 from 2004 was arguably the best installment from the 00’s decade in terms of storyline since it was the game when Jin finally turned evil after being fully consumed by the Devil Gene. Prior to Tekken 5 many had considered Tekken 3 from ’97-’98 to be the best installment within its series especially considering its commercial success and the cult following it developed years after its release.

Tekken 3 was one of most popular video games of the PS1 era reaching more than eight million copies. During the 2010’s decade we got Tekken 7 which ended up becoming the best selling entry within the entire franchise reaching more than 10 million sales worldwide following its 2015 release. The cinematic cutscenes and storyline within Tekken 7 were probably the best that Bandi Namco has ever produced. We also got to see a Tekken animated series back in 2022 which ended up exceeding many people’s expectations. Recently, we got to witness the release of Tekken 8 a game which critics are saying is the best installment since Tekken 3 from the late 90’s. Even though, the original trilogy of Tekken games are classics it seems like the series in general is much bigger today than it was during the 90’s and the 2000’s. Also, the visuals, gameplay and storytelling for the Tekken games have improved dramatically within the past two decades in comparison to the 90’s when the series was once thought at the pinnacle of its popularity. The Mishima family storyline was been one of the main things that has kept the Tekken series alive for so long and has only improved over time.
