Final Fantasy X-2 was probably one of most memorable installments within its own series in relation to the 2000’s decade. Final Fantasy X-2 was developed and published by Square and released for the PlayStation 2 back in 2003. Final Fantasy X-2 was the second part of Final Fantasy X which was released in ’01 where the story followed the events of the previous game. The story for Final Fantasy X-2 revolved around three female characters Rikku, Yuna and Paine who were searching for Tidus the main protagonist of Final Fantasy X while trying to prevent a war in the fictional land of Spira. Final Fantasy X-2 had featured turn-based RPG gameplay along with an active time battle system and various monsters and creatures that players had to battle throughout the game. Yuna the leader of the trio known as the Gullwings was probably one of the most popular female characters of the Final Fantasy series next to the likes of Tifa Lockhart from FFVII. There are many who would agree that Yuna, Rikku and Paine were all more memorable characters than Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII which came out in 2009.

The gameplay changes and comedic tone in Final Fantasy X-2 were both deviations from what we got in FFX and it felt more lighthearted than in comparison. Initially, there was backlash against Final Fantasy X-2 when it first came out in ’03 but now two decades later the game is viewed in a different light. Final Fantasy X-2 was clearly a better game than FFXI and FFXIII but not quite on the same level as FFX and FFXII. Despite, the backlash Final Fantasy X-2 got following its ’03 release it still managed to sell around 5.4 million copies on the PlayStation 2 throughout the 2000’s decade. Since its release for the PS2 back in 2003 Final Fantasy X-2 has been ported to various game systems including the PS3 and PlayStation Vita in 2013. It should also be noted that Final Fantasy X-2 was remastered in HD and re-released along with FFX for the PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch between ’15-’19.
