As it currently stands Sony’s PlayStation Portal is set to be released in retailers around the world in November 2023. The PlayStation Portal will be Sony’s first portable game system since the Vita which was released back in 2011 which ended up being a commercial failure. The PlayStation Vita was ultimately discontinued in 2019 but it was not considered to be a competitor of the Nintendo Switch during the late 2010’s. There have been numerous articles circulating around the web that mentions how the PlayStation Portal is not made to compete with the Switch console. While the design for the PlayStation Portal seems unoriginal and somewhat of a ripoff of how the Nintendo Switch looks its almost guaranteed that the quality is going to be twice as better. When it comes down to portal game systems Nintendo has dominated since the 90’s and the closest Sony came to challenging them was the mid 2000’s when the PSP was released in 2004. The PlayStation Portal will have features including an eight inch LCD Screen along with 1080p resolution at 60 fps. The PlayStation Portal also gives players remote access to their PS5 consoles which feels somewhat similar to what the Wii-U gamepad was used for back in the day. The PlayStation Portal looks promising but the Switch console has already surpassed the Wii console in terms of sales and is the best selling console of the past decade behind the PS4 right now.
