Its hard to believe that Phantasy Star IV: End of the Millennium is almost 30 years old. Phantasy Star IV was probably the best RPG title that Sega had produced during the 90’s and was arguably the best Sega Genesis game from 1995. Phantasy Star IV had everything one could ask for in a 90’s RPG including great graphics, mesmerizing soundtrack and good story. Also, the intro for Phantasy Star IV was incredible and got players hyped with backstory being summarized within a minute. The gameplay for Phantasy Star IV similar to its predecessors was pretty unique especially during the most battles. Sega obviously wanted to be very different than Square Enix’s Final Fantasy series since the perspective was closer to that of first person. While the characters featured in Phantasy Star IV were seemingly forgettable the gameplay experience felt rich as players got to explore foreign lands and mysterious caves while battling various types of creatures in the process. Some would go on record and argue that the final boss known as The Profound Darkness was more difficult than he needed to be but the ending of the game was worth the trouble. Its a bit shocking that Sega never made a Phantasy Start 5 considering how good End of the Millennium was. But since more people were turning to PlayStation during the mid 90’s its likely that Phantasy Star IV ended up being overshadowed. It should also be noted that there were more high profile RPG’s on Super Nintendo during the 90’s and people owned consoles like Sega Genesis or Sega Saturn to play Sonic games. If Phantasy Star IV was released a few years earlier it could of ended up selling more than it did. Phantasy Star IV: End of the Millennium was better than its 1990 predecessor Generations of Doom but not quite good enough to help move the needle Sega in relation to the console wars against Nintendo.
