There is no question that 2018 was arguably one of the best years in relation gaming that the world has seen within the past decade. There were so many high profile video games that were released that year such as Marvel’s Spider Man, God of War, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Red Dead Redemption 2, Monster Hunter: World and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Most of the high profile games that came out back in 2018 appeared either on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One two consoles that were competing against the Nintendo Switch during the time. While the Nintendo Switch has gained a ton of mainstream publicity the console did not have too many games that could compete with titles being featured on the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One. In 2017, Nintendo had released Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which are among two of the best selling video games for the Switch console. In 2018, the biggest game that Nintendo had released was Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which exceeded the expectations of many hardcore fans of the series. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a roster of 89 characters most of them who needed to be unlocked in versus mode.
Along with the familiar faces from previous entries of Super Smash Bros series like Mario, Link, Bowser, Donkey Kong and others Smash Bros Ultimate had DLC characters from different franchises outside of Nintendo such as Joker from Persona 5, Sephiroth the main villain from FFVII and Sora the lead character from Kingdom Hearts. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was one of the most addictive crossover fighting games of the 2010’s. The campaign mode for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was compelling the gameplay never got boring and there were so many characters to choose from that players could become overwhelmed. Since its release Super Smash Bros. Ultimate managed to reach over 30 million copies worldwide on the Nintendo Switch and is currently the 3rd best selling game for that console. While Dragon Ball FighterZ gained a ton of mainstream attention following its release in ’18 it did not come close to having the level of success that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had from that year onwards. While Super Smash Bros. Ultimate may not be as iconic as the Melee game from 2001, its still considered to be a far more superior entry within the series in terms of overall quality and replay value.
