When it comes down to the early 2000’s we got to see nothing but fun and adventurous games on both Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. The Pokemon series along with Super Mario were obviously very popular on the Game Boy Color during the early 00’s. However, there were a various titles that were overlooked on the Game Boy Color back in the early 2000’s including the original Shante game from 2002. The original Shante game was is one that was highly underrated because it looked and felt different than you standard platform game. Shante also had metroidvania elements which contributed to the overall quality of game and ended up being a way better platformer than it had any business being. The original Shante title had a mesmerizing chiptune soundtrack, polished graphics and actually featured cutscenes and dialogue involving the main character throughout game.

Generally, platform games like Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog focuses more on the gameplay opposed to the plot. The plot for the original Shante game was easy to follow and the even though the dialogue between the main character and Risky Boots made everything seem more interesting. The game featured five towns and the boss battles for each stages was more challenging than one would expect. One of the most creative aspects about the gameplay for Shante is that the main character has the ability to transform different animals after learning new dance moves from Guardian Genies. The Guardian Genies in the game also play a significant role in helping Shante gain access to new dungeons. Along with being able to transform into different animals like a monkey or an elephant she can also attack enemies by using her hair as a whip. Shante can could also pick up items throughout the game such as potions for health recovery while being able to upgrade her skills for better combat. Shante was without a doubt one of the underrated games that Capcom has ever published but unfortunately it ended up being a commercial failure. Despite, its low sales Shante ended up becoming a cult classic and has spawned multiple sequels throughout the 2000’s and 2010’s decades. It should also be noted that the original Shante game was also ported for the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5 between 2021-2023.
