There is no question that Super Mario Land: 6 Golden Coins is one of the most overlooked installments within the entire Mario series. Super Mario Land 2 ended up becoming one of the most popular Mario games from the 90’s and managed to sell over eleven million copies worldwide for the original Game Boy system. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins from 1992 was the game where Wario made his debut as the main antagonist of the game after stealing Mario’s Palace and turning all of the creatures in his kingdom against him. The enemies looked very different from what you would see in a standard Mario game and the boss battles were very interesting because they took place in a variety of settings whether it be land, air, sea or even space. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins had a notorious reputation for being more difficult than it had any business being. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins was hard enough to play through as it was but when players got to Wario’s Castle it seemed almost unfair. Wario’s Castle was probably more difficult than any of Bowser’s Castle’s in other Mario games and players had limited lives to complete all of Super Mario Land 2. Its a shame that Nintendo never continued the saga in the Super Mario Land 3 game because Wario was a slightly more interesting villain than Boswer who is the main canonical villain of the Super Mario Bros main series. Its almost shocking to know that Nintendo never remade Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins especially considering how much commercial success the game had following its release in ’92. A potential remake of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins for the Nintendo Switch or a next generation console would definitely go viral online considering how iconic the game is.
