Apparently, the European Union has more of a role in shaping the landscape of gaming than many people initially thought. While Microsoft’s multi-billion dollar acquisition of Activision-Blizzard is something the EU has no problem with whatsoever; it also looks like the European Union will eventually require all handheld game systems to have replaceable batteries starting in 2027. The European Union decision regarding handheld game consoles in the future is considered to be a controversial one. However, handheld consoles requiring replaceable batteries could potentially be a good thing because its cost effective for consumers and they can they can potential save more money on their electric bills. If the European Union does plan on enforcing this new mandate it means that less Switch consoles will be sold in retail by the time we get to 2027. Since Nintendo is likely to unveil their next generation game system in 2024 is very likely that we will eventually see the discontinuation of the Switch console within the next year or two. The Nintendo Switch has been in retail for over six years now and many people feel that its time for the gaming corporation to move on to their next generation console. Also, the European Union’s new mandate makes many people wonder about the future of handheld streaming devices such as the Logitech G Cloud which came out back in October 2022.
