Did Superman ever have any good video games?

When it comes down to superheroes in general one of the most popular names in comic book history is Clark Kent also known as Superman. Everyone knows that Superman has been around since the late 1930’s in relation to comics and has received numerous movies since the 1950’s. Despite, his popularity throughout a majority of the 20th century it seems like Americans have grown weary of the Superman character ever since the 80’s. Back in ’87 we got Superman IV: The Quest For Peace which many critics had disapproved of due to lack of creativity along with the stales news of seemingly paragon superhero. Also, when it comes down to movies Superman had better movies than he did video games for the most part. There were movies like Superman II (1981), Superman: The Movie (1978) Superman Returns (2006) and even the Man of Steel (2013) that people enjoyed despite not being the top tier of greatest superhero movies of all-time. But when it comes down to video games nearly impossible to find a standalone Superman title that was considered a five-star classic in the eyes of critics and gaming publications.

Almost every major Superman video game was horrible in one way or another with Superman 64 possibly being the worst superhero video game of all-time. Its almost impossible to name any great Superman game that has been released within the past 20 years and even in the 90’s his games were considered abysmal for the most part. One of the few Superman games that was somewhat decent was The Death and Return of Superman (1994) for Super NES and Sega Genesis. As far as high quality standalone video games are concerned Superman does not a stellar track record especially as it relates to him being a main protagonist. Some of the best video games that Superman has ever appeared came out in the 2010’s decade with titles like Injustice (2013) and Injustice 2 (2017) where he was portrayed as a main antagonist. One of the many reasons why people in western countries are not into Superman games is because they despise one dimensional heroic characters and prefer anti-heroes or villains. If anything Superman shines more as a anti-villain because its more believable opposed to making him a virtually indestructible super-hero that the public cannot relate to. When it comes down to standalone video games starring Superman as the main protagonist he could not hold a candle to the likes of Batman or Spider-Man; which is something that has been proven during the 2010’s decade. During the 10’s we got to see games like Batman: Arkham City (2011), Batman: Arkham Knight (2015) and Spider-Man (2018) for the PS4 which are all considered five-star masterpieces in the eyes of many critics worldwide. Superman has been played out as a superhero for decades now and unfortunately he will never have the same level of success as Batman or Spider-Man did during the 2010’s decade.
