The Mortal Kombat series has been around for 30 years now with the very first title becoming a cult classic back in ’92. Since the release of the original Mortal Kombat series one of the most popular names within the franchise was Sonya Blade who worked for EarthRealms Special Forces alongside the likes of Major Jax Briggs. Sonya Blade also got married to another iconic character within the Mortal Kombat series Johnny Cage who has also been around since ’92 and had a daughter named Cassie Cage who first appeared in Mortal Kombat X back in 2015. In terms of popularity in relation to the fighting genre of gaming Sonya Blade is considered to be a household name similar to Capcom’s Chun-Li from the Street Fighter series who has been around since 1991. During the 90’s Mortal Kombat was considered to be highly controversial because of the blood and gore and made headlines on news for its addictive yet disturbing content. Sonya Blade was one of the very first female characters to be included in violent video games which did nothing more than add to her legacy. Since Mortal Kombat is more popular than Street Fighter nowadays many would go on record and argue that Sonya Blade has surpassed the likes Chun-Li and Mai Shiranui in terms of popularity as it relates to video games. Sonya Blade was one of the first badass female video game characters of gaming during a period time where male characters dominated the scene. Some would argue that Sonya Blade was ahead of her time and has only improved character wise since the 90’s.
