When we think about some of the classic Sega games outside of the Sonic the Hedgehog series that stood out during the 90’s there was a handful of titles that people can remember. One of the few 90’s Sega titles that was surprisingly good was the ’96 action game Nights Into Dreams which came out for the Sega Saturn. Even though, Nights Into Dreams was probably one of the most popular Sega Saturn titles ever released it never receive a sequel for Dreamcast which came out back in 1998. The graphics for the original Nights Into Dreams title was ahead of times and pretty awesome by ’96 home console standards. In fact, some would argue that Nights Into Dreams was a better game than Sonic 3D Blast which was one of the most awkward isometric platform titles ever despite its solid soundtrack. It should also be noted that the main character NiGHTS was one of the most popular Sega characters during the mid 90’s next to the likes Sonic the Hedgehog and Knuckles the Echidna. While Nights Into Dreams had a direct sequel that appeared on the Wii console in ’07 the series had declined in popularity by then due to its absence during the late 90’s and most of the 2000’s. Not making a sequel for Nights Into Dreams on Dreamcast was quite possibly one of the biggest mistakes that Sega made during the 90’s. But then again despite the praise that Nights Into Dreams received from critics and various gaming publications the title was not a commercial success and did not have the same level of appeal that the Sonic titles did back in the 90’s.
