One of the biggest rumors that has been swirling around the internet as of late is the idea of Square Enix being bought out by Sony Corporation sometime in the near future. As many people know Sony had recently purchased the video game developer company Bungie a few months ago for $3.6 billion as a response to Microsoft’s purchase of Activision-Blizzard for $68.7 billion. It should be noted that Sony is being investigated by the Federal Trade Commission for purchase of Bungie because it raises questions about the potential violation antitrust laws. While both Sony and Microsoft has come under scrutiny in relation to buying out third party video game developers; many analysts believe that this trend will continue with other big third party companies. If Sony is somehow successful in acquiring Square Enix sometime in the near future than it would definitely significant effect on the landscape of gaming. In fact, people will have a more difficult time determining what game system they should purchase between PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch in the future. Almost one knows that third party RPG video games stand out more on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles than that of Xbox especially as it relates to anything related to the Final Fantasy series. Xbox game systems like Series X seems to appeal more to fans of the first and third person shooter genres of gaming. With Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard they have locked down the Call of Duty franchise which has been one of the biggest third party attractions within the gaming world in over the past decade. While Sony’s purchasing Square Enix in the near future seems likely nothing is currently set in stone right now or has yet to be confirmed. Hopefully, more information regarding Sony and Square Enix comes to light within the next few months or so.
