As many people know Owlboy is a critically acclaimed 2D platformer-adventure title that has been around since 2016 and looks simply stunning in terms of gameplay, graphics and design. In fact, Owlboy looks like something that could have worked during the 16-bit era of gaming back in the early 90’s for a console such as the Sega Genesis. Despite, how piper Owlboy has become on the PlayStation 4 along with the Nintendo Switch as of late some would argue that may not have been as successful back in the early 90’s when 2D gaming in general was mainstream.

As far as competition was concerned in relation to the 2D genre of gaming there were games such a Super Mario World, Some the Hedgehog 2, Super Metroid, Super Castlevania VI and many others which were all very big on consoles such as the Super NES and the Sega Genesis. While Owlboy is a 2D digital masterpiece it definitely could of ended up becoming one of those games that got overshadowed back in the day. As far as the 10’s decade is concerned it seems like 2D retro themed games have a stronger appeal now than they did in the early 90’s mainly because that type of gaming is no longer mainstream. While its possible that Owlboy could have ended up selling more than one million copies back in the early 90’s is questionable on whether or not it would have been as pop as it currently is now.
