When we think about the console wars between Sony and Microsoft there is no question that the PlayStation 4 has been more successful than the Xbox One in terms of sales. Ever since both game consoles were released back in late 2013 the PlayStation 4 has managed to sell approximately 79 million units worldwide. Microsoft never officially released the exact number of sales for the Xbox One but its believed that it hit somewhere between 25-30 million units worldwide. Either way the overall sales of the Xbox One has seemingly feel below the expectations of many people and some are wondering whether or not the pricing of the console was a factor for lackluster sales for the past few years.

When the Xbox One was first released it was priced at $399. While some might argue that $399 was very expensive it should be noted that that release price for the PlayStation 4 was approximately the same. Seeing how popular the PlayStation 3 ended up being it Microsoft could have dropped the original price of the Xbox One by maybe $50 or so. But even then the gap in relation to sales between the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 would have been wide seeing how one console was backwards compatible while the other was not. The lack of backwards compatibility would make people interested in buying the PlayStation 4 to enjoy first party games such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4 and other that you could not own for the PlayStation 3. In fact many would argue that backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 games actually hurt the Xbox One more and was a bigger factor on why the console sold less opposed to its initial price tag.
