When we think about 2D comic book styled beat em up titles from the early 90’s and the early 00’s Comix Zone and Viewtiful Joe are two titles that come to mind. Comic Zone was first released in the summer of 1995 for the Sega Genesis and it really stood out as a unique beat em up title during the early 90’s since we never saw anything like it on the SNES. Even though, Comic Zone received positive reviews from critics the game was generally criticized for its controls and along with its repetition in relation to solving puzzles along with combat.

We then fast-forward to 2003 where Capcom gives us Viewtiful Joe for GameCube along with the PS2. The comic book styled artwork along with the 3D cel-shaded graphics very impressive along VFX Power feature of this game. As a platform/beat em up title Viewtiful Joe stood out for a few reasons. First, the beat em up genre had declined substantially in popularity after the early 90’s and a game Viewtiful Joe still managed to turn heads in 2003-2004. Second, it was probably one of the best beat em up titles that Capcom had released since the Final Fight series for the SNES. In terms of which game is more successful many people would be way more inclined to give edge Viewtiful Joe.
