Could Streets of Rage have worked in 3D during the 90’s?

There is no question that the Streets of Rage series is the one of the best when it comes down to the beat em up genre of gaming.  This was especially true as the Streets of Rage series competed with the Final Fight series that was featured on the Super Nintendo back in the early 90’s.

As great as the Streets of Rage series was some would agree that Sega should have developed a 3D game following the release of Streets of Rage III back in 1995.  In fact there were plans on developing a sequel to Streets of Rage III but eventually the game was cancelled.  While die hard fans of the Streets of Rage series may have been upset by the news there are others who believe that it was for the better. The 2D graphics, gameplay and soundtrack of the first three titles is what made the Streets of Rage series great to begin with.

Even though, we never got a Streets of Rage 4 the world did get to see the release of a game called Fighting Force which was developed by Core Design and released in 1997. Fighting Force was a 3D beat em up game released for the PS1 and the N64 and was arguably the closest that we got to a 3D Streets of Rage title back in the 90’s.
