When we look back that the initial releases of the Nintendo Wii-U and the Switch consoles we tend notice a huge difference in terms of sales within the first month of each game system. When the Nintendo Wii-U was first released back in October 2012 the console itself had managed to sell over 890,000 units within six weeks. However, when the Wii-U became available in retails stores in countries like America, Japan and Europe the original Wii was still being sold as well. The introductory price for the Wii back in 2006 was around $249 for the basic set will the Wii-U was approximately $299. Even though, the Wii-U was priced slightly higher the original Wii console when it was first released the game system was close to being six years old the had fallen to around $130.

The original Nintendo Wii console was not discounted until October 2012 which may have play a role in why the Wii-U did not sell as much within its first year. Now when we look at the Nintendo Switch the console had sold more than 906,000 in March 2017. Not only was the Switch console heavily marketed for close to a year prior to its release but the Wii-U game system was discontinued by Nintendo in some countries such as Europe and Japan in late 2013.

When it comes down to sales the Wii-U often considered the lowest selling game console that Nintendo has ever made. The Nintendo Switch has sold over 2.7 million units worldwide since is release and many may argue that the discontinuation of the Wii-U one of the main reasons why.
