When we think about virtual reality we instantly think about 3D gaming and how the video game experience will be taken to the next level.  We also think about how new games for the PlayStation 4 such as Star Trek: Bridge Crew which will allow people enjoy the digital excitement they crave in video games.  However, when we think about virtual reality we never seem to think about 2D video games like Shovel Night which has become very popular.   Platform titles such as Shovel Night would be very interesting to play in virtual reality depending on whether or not video game developers can pull it off.  In fact the idea of having 2D platform games is something that many people have been anxious of seeing since the 90’s.   There were 2D games such as Super Mario Bros and Mega Man that we have always dreamed of having in relation to virtual reality.  Since the release of the Oculus Rift or the PlayStation VR back in 2016 we have not heard anything about 2D games becoming a priority for virtual reality and it seems like video game developers have no plans on making one either.

While some people may be upset to learn that there may not be any 2D games for virtual reality it may be what is best for the gaming industry right now.  The fact that old school 2D gaming utilizes sprites, colorful graphics, and catchy soundtracks are all elements that adds to its appeal.   The 16 and 32 bit era of gaming was an exciting period in the industry and adding virtual reality to classics could possibly detract the excitement that people have got from playing old-school titles from the 90’s and early 00’s for consoles such as the Game Boy Advance.  In theory adding virtual reality for 2D games sounds great but it would probably more difficult to pull of in practice.
