It was announced back on March 24th, 2026 that Epic Games were making layoffs to their staff due to the declining popularity of Fortnite. It should be noted that Fortnite has been around for almost a decade after being launched in 2017. It was revealed that Epic Games plans on cutting around 1,000 employees in a effort to save at least $500 million. Fortnite is one of the biggest franchises in the gaming industry and is has earned more than $26 billion since its release. The lack of engagement that Fortnite has been receiving has of late should not come as a massive surprise despite all of the music, movie and gaming related crossovers. Fortnite reportedly peaked in player count back in 2023 and now it feels a bit oversaturated. Nowadays, AAA video games companies are doing anything they can for a quick money grab and aggressive monetization is one of the main issues that Fortnite have.

While the massive success of Fortnite elevated the status of Epic Games to new heights the company’s image has been damaged following the legal battle with Apple back in 2020. The lawsuit with Apple cost Epic Games more than $1 billion and the decline in interest that Fortnite is facing is lead to people losing their jobs which is not entirely their fault. But to be fair the gaming industry has been rocked with countless layoffs post-pandemic and gamers are more picky and cynical than ever. There is more pressure on AAA video game developers to create better games that do not feel like ripoffs or quick cash grabs. While Epic Games have done a good job on keeping Fortnite relevant for the past several years; its painfully obvious that the game is past its peak in popularity. The longevity of Fortnite has been impressive and the game has been apart of modern day pop culture for a while now. The layoffs made by Epic Games does not feel any different than other countries that seek to earn more profits with a reduced staff. While restructuring and cost-efficiency are reasons that corporations use to justify mass layoffs its something that is becoming more common in modern day society.
