Its hard to believe that is been fifteen years since Batman: Arkham City was released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Batman: Arkham City was the sequel to the critically acclaimed Arkham Asylum title from 2009. Batman: Arkham City is widely considered to be one of the greatest action-adventure superhero video games of 10’s decade if not all-time. Batman: Arkham City came out during a time when DC’s popularity had skyrocketed following the success the Batman: Dark Knight from 2008 which earned more than $1 billion in box office revenue. As iconic as the Batman: Dark Knight movie was in the late 00’s the Arkham video game series was almost as popular due how innovative the gameplay was. The freeflow combat system along with the weaponry that players had access to while controlling Batman was impressive. Batman: Arkham City focused more on offensive combat oppose defense which was considered to be positive.

The cinematic cutscenes and Arkham City were breathtaking and felt like the absolute pinnacle of gaming in relation to the PS3 and Xbox 360 era. In story for Arkham City felt more intriguing than its prequel with the main villain Hugo Strange. In Batman: Arkham City Hugo Strange and Ra’s al Ghul is responsible for starting Protocol 10 which involved the mass murder of inmates in Gotham’s slum area after Mayor Quincy Sharp turns it into a giant prison. The aesthetics, graphics and the promotional art for Arkham City looked amazing despite having a darker atmosphere than its 2009 prequel. If anything Batman: Arkham City was one of Rocksteady Studio’s best video games of the early 10’s along with Mortal Kombat IX which also came in 2011. Batman: Arkham City had countless puzzle games and a variety of different missions which featured the appearance of some of the most popular villains in the DC franchise. In Arkham City villainous characters like Joker, Harley Quinn, Dr. Freeze, Bane, Riddler, Deadshot, Two-Face and Penguin are all featured.

While Joker the main villain in Arkham Asylum was not the main antagonist in Arkham City he was still responsible for getting Batman infected with a blood related disease forcing him to find a cure for it. The cool thing about Batman: Arkham City is that you get to play as multiple characters aside from Batman including Catwoman, Robin and Nightwing. Batman: Arkham City was the superhero action-adventure game that set the gaming world on fire years before we got the classic Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 game from 2018. Since its release back in 2011 Batman: Arkham City had managed to reach more than 9.5 million copies worldwide making it one of Warner Bros most successful video games ever. Arkham City came out about year before the Batman: Dark Knight Rises film was released in 2012. The Dark Knight Rises film which was also directed by Christopher Nolan also grossed more than $1 billion in box office revenue which also helped boost the popularity of the Arkham series. Arkham City is one of the few. Batman games that is absolutely timeless and is better than a majority of AAA video games that has been released on the PS5 and Xbox Series X post-2020.
