The year just started and the gaming world has already been rocked by a major announcement that is sending shockwaves through the gaming industry. We just learned that Phil Spencer a man who has been with Microsoft for almost four decades has announced his retirement and will be stepping down as the CEO of Xbox. Phil Spencer has been the CEO of Xbox for around 12 years after he took the position during the Xbox One era back in Spring 2014. Not only is Phil Spencer retiring from Microsoft we also learned that Sarah Bond will be leaving the company after serving as the company’s President for roughly over two years. There are many people within the gaming community who are speculating as to why both Phil and Sarah have decided to leave Microsoft in 2026. But when you look at Xbox’s financial reports and how much revenue the company has lost within the past couple of years its not surprising to see why Phil and Sarah are leaving. It has been reported that Xbox’s hardware revenue has significantly declined within the past three years with more gamers having greater preference for rival consoles such as PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

There are hardly any first-party IP’s that are able to compete with anything that Sony and Nintendo has for their current generation consoles. Ever since the 2000’s Xbox has been seen as the premier console for third-party video games while its competitors have been successful in developing and growing their first-party IP’s to generate more revenue. Despite, Halo being massively popular during the 00’s decade many would argue that the first-person shooter began to declining in popularity after the first half of the 10’s decade. It should also be noted that Microsoft ended up making a series of layoffs between 2024-2025. The Activision-Blizzard merger with Microsoft is something that lead to roughly around 1,900 employees being laid off within the gaming division. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard was something was considered to be highly controversial back in 2023. Ever since, Microsoft merged with Activision-Blizzard we have seen the release of two bad Call of Duty games in ’23 and ’25. While Microsoft’s owns a series of high profile IP’s through Activision-Blizzard like Call of Duty, Overwatch, Diablo and Guitar Hero Xbox is still struggling financially.

As it currently stands Phil Spencer is supposed to be replaced by Asha Sharma as the head of Microsoft Gaming. While many are skeptical on whether or not Asha Sharma will make a significant difference in turning things around for Xbox she seems dedicated to providing a better gaming experience for players. Since being named the new head of Microsoft Gaming Asha Sharma has promised that there will be”no soulless AI Slop” which gives gamers a sense of optimism in relation to upcoming Xbox games. While gamers might have a sense of hope in relation to the future of Xbox some feel that is might eventually suffer a similar fate that Sega did back in 2001. After Sega exited the console wars in ’01 the company focused more on third-party software and producing high profile video games opposed to hardware consoles. Its a well known fact that Microsoft has signed 10-year deals with both Nintendo and Sony to have Call of Duty on both company’s current and future generation consoles. It seems like Microsoft has been slowly leaning towards being third-party developer which is not a bad idea of hardware console sales continue to decline. Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond’s departure from Microsoft marks a brand new chapter for Xbox which seems very promising as of right now.
