Its hard to believe that WCW vs The World was released on PlayStation three decades ago. WCW vs The World was published worldwide by THQ while being licensed by Asmik Ace Entertainment in Japan. WCW vs The World was created by Japanese video game developer The Man Breeze now known as syn Sophia, Inc. WCW vs The World was a 3D pro wrestling game that many people considered to be revolutionary. In terms of gameplay and graphics WCW vs The World felt a prequel to the critically acclaimed WCW vs nWo World tour game which came out on the Nintendo 64 in 1997. WCW vs The World was released in ’96 the same year the Monday Night Wars between World Championship Wrestling and rival company at time WWE had started heating up. WCW vs The World was completely different than cartoony WWF: In Your House Game that also came out in ’96 which highly resembled WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game which came out in 1995. The gameplay of WCW vs The World focused more on realism in terms of grappling and submission holds.

WCW vs The World featured at least 50 different characters with at least half of them being fictional. The actual WCW characters included in the game featured the hottest names the promotion had in ’96 including Hulk Hogan, Sting, Ric Flair, Eddy Guerrero, Lex Luger, The Giant, Scott Steiner, Jeff Jarrett and more. WCW vs The World was loaded with fictional characters who were based on actual Japanese wrestlers. WCW vs The World featured several different game modes including Exhibition, League Challenge, Best of Seven, Elimination, Tournament, League and Double Title Match. While the game modes in WCW vs The World were fun the downside about the game was the absence of tag-team gameplay. WCW vs The World placed major emphasis on one on one matches because the creators want players to focus more on the graphics and gameplay mechanics opposed to variety. WCW vs The World almost felt like a prototype to every major pro wrestling game that came exclusively on the N64 including WCW vs nWo World Tour, WCW/nWo Revenge, WWF WrestleMania 2000 and WWF No Mercy from ’97-’00.

If anything WCW vs The World probably would have been better off for Nintendo 64 especially since the console produced superior graphics. The N64 was best for multiplayer gameplay consisting of four players and WCW vs The World could have benefited from it. The limitations of the 32-bit PlayStation console in some ways prevented WCW vs The World from being better than it could have been. However, in the grand scheme of things WCW vs The World was the start of a series of 3D classics that the gaming world got to see on the N64 during the late 90’s. While WCW vs The World was not the greatest 3D pro wrestling title ever made it was a pretty good game by mid 90’s standards. Even though, the graphics for WCW vs The World might seem outdated its still a pretty fun game to play with an unforgettable soundtrack.
