Its crazy to think that it has been 25 years since Capcom vs SNK 2 was released on Dreamcast and PlayStation 2. Capcom vs SNK 2 was the sequel to the original cross-promotion arcade fighter which came out back in 2000. Capcom vs SNK 2 was a fighting game that was supposed to be an improvement form Capcom vs SNK: Millennium Fight and in some ways that was the case. SNK vs Capcom 2 had a bigger roster than its predecessor and the control-scheme was better and the game overall felt more balanced. The Groove System was probably one of main features about Capcom vs SNK 2 that people liked because it provide players with more range in terms of gameplay. The Groove System consisted of six different styles which were C, P, S, N, K and A. Each style style in SNK vs Capcom 2 represented something different like the A-Groove allowed players to perform custom combos. The P-Groove in this game represented parrying while the K-Groove provided players with a rage meter that increased as players took damage; making the super moves players perform more deadly.

Capcom vs SNK 2 featured around 48 characters with Shin Akuma and Ultimate Rugal appearing as bosses. Capcom vs SNK 2 saw the inclusion of many iconic characters from both gaming companies including Ryu, Kyo Kusanagi, Mai Shiranui, Chun-Li, Morrigan Aensland, Terry Bogard to form a massive dream roster. Despite, having outdated 2D character sprites the gameplay was still both fun and challenging. Capcom vs SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001 was not heavily story driven similar to its predecessor. The story for Capcom vs SNK 2 was simply about rival financial companies funding a global fighting event with the winners becoming world champion. The fighting event was known as “Millionaire Fighting 2001” and involved the rival businesses involving the Master’s Foundation and the Garcia Financial Clique.

SNK vs Capcom 2 came out during a time where in-depth storytelling was never essential in video games with gameplay and replay value being heavily emphasized. While SNK vs Capcom 2 was a solid fighting game it came out during the early 2000’s. In 2001, more people were interested in 3D gaming and were probably disappointed when they saw sprites and graphics opposed to 3D graphics and character models. Also, Capcom vs SNK 2: Mark of The Millennium 2001 would have been better if players could switch characters during battle similar to the Marvel vs Capcom series. While Capcom vs SNK 2 was a commercial failure back 2001 there are still many people who would love to see a direct sequel. Its been a quarter century since Mark of the Millennium was released and a SNK vs Capcom 3 game would most likely attract more mainstream attention than it did during the early 2000’s.
