Is hard to believe its been over three decades since the very first Sonic the Hedgehog game was released on the Sega Genesis. Sonic the Hedgehog was a fast-paced 2D platform that came out in 1991 which many people found addictive. The original Sonic the Hedgehog felt a lot like the 2D Mario games in the past in terms of gameplay but instead of a plumber you had a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog as the main character. The level designs and soundtrack for Sonic the Hedgehog sounded way better than anything you heard in older Mario games. In Sonic the Hedgehog each soundtracks fit each level perfectly and the game slowly increased in difficult as players progressed throughout the game. The first stage in Sonic the Hedgehog known as Green Hill Zone is arguably the easiest and most iconic level in the entire series. Also, the soundtrack for Green Hill Zone was timeless along with the likes of Marble Zone and Spring Yard Zone.

In Sonic the Hedgehog each level was uniquely different and its slow increase in difficultly and somewhat steep learning curve made it more interesting. The original Sonic the Hedgehog was easy to play and even harder to master especially since Tails does not accompany Sonic in this game. The original Sonic the Hedgehog had the basic formula of players completing two acts following a boss battle against Dr. Robotnik at the end of each stage. There were also opportunities within Sonic the Hedgehog were players got to play through special stages and complete mini-games in order to gain access of one of the seven Chaos Emeralds. Sonic the Hedgehog was a game that not only proved to be a worthy competitor to the Super Mario Bros series but it also helped revolutionize the 2D platform genre of gaming altogether. If Sonic the Hedgehog did not exist the 90’s console wars between Nintendo & Sega never happens. Sonic the Hedgehog has been the main mascot for Sega for 35 years now and the blue hedgehog is more culturally relevant than ever now.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a name that had transcended the gaming world into television and Hollywood. Its seems like the Sonic the Hedgehog has been more popular during the first half of the 2020’s decade than he was back in the 90’s with a trilogy of successful movies. Sonic the Hedgehog is a franchise that almost everyone modern day casual gamers are familiar which speaks volumes considering the declining interest in Triple AAA video game franchises as a whole. The original Sonic the Hedgehog game from ’91 was a massive success reaching over 15 million copies in sales sine its release. The Sonic game from ’91 eventually spawned two sequels between ’92-’94 which were just as iconic and are still fondly talked about to this day. There no question that without the original Sonic the Hedgehog game from ’91 the landscape of the gaming would look completely different today. Even though, the original Sonic game is more than three decades old its still one of most fun and addictive platform games ever made.
