
Its crazy to think that Sonic Generations came out fifteen years ago for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Sonic Generations was a game that came out back in 2011 a year that was widely beloved by many people. Sonic Generations was the game followed the critically acclaimed Sonic Colors title from 2010. Sonic Generations was memorable game because of the concept of nostalgia in relation to the plot of the story. The story for Sonic Generations involved Sonic being split into two being including his present incarnation and is classic 2D counterpart. An entity known as the Time Eater crashes Sonic’s birthday and create time holes which scatters his friends whom he and his counterpart has to rescue. The cool thing about Sonic Generations is that the game brought back old 2D levels from the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy and allowed them to play them in 3D.

There were iconic levels like Green Hill Zone, Chemical Plant Zone and Sky Sanctuary which made returns in Sonic Generations with modern versions of each stages having remixed themes. There also stages from the Sonic Adventure series that returned in Generations like City Escape, Seaside Hill and Speed Highway which was something that Sonic fans from the early 00’s could also appreciate. The purpose of the game was for modern Sonic and his 2D counterpart to defeat Dr. Eggman to restore the timeline and to prevent history from being erased. Sonic Generations had a total of nine main levels with each having two acts each. There was also a total of 90 Challenge Acts which were split between the two different versions of Sonic. The completion of certain in-game challenges in Sonic Generations led to players unlocking bonus content including artwork and music.

Sonic Generations was a game that critics and gamers alike praised for using nostalgia to breathe new life into a series that was seemingly dying following the early 00’s. Sega managed to take two different elements of gameplay and harmoniously blend them something they attempted to do in Sonic Unleashed but failed. The idea having 3D versions of classic 2D Sonic levels from the early 90’s felt like a dream come true for hardcore Sega fans. Sonic Generations similar to Sonic Colors ended up being a commercial success reaching over 2 million copies in sales. The popularity of Sonic Generations over the past decade eventually lead Sega to remaster and re-release the game in ’24 entitled Sonic X Shadow Generations. Sonic Generations was a game that screamed nostalgia which appealed to long time fans of the Sonic series while simultaneously being something that casual gamers can enjoy as well. Even though, its been fifteen years since the original Sonic Generations game was released it still holds up in the 2020’s decade.
