lt is hard to believe that its been 30 years since Seiken Densetsu 3 was released in Japan for the SNES back in 1995. Seiken Densetsu was developed and published by Square Enix and was considered to be the sequel to the critically acclaimed Secret of Mana title from 1993. Seiken Densetsu 3 was a game that many people in America were not familiar with back in the 90’s. In fact, Seiken Densetsu 3 did not appear America until 2019 when the Switch console came out. Seiken Densetsu 3 was quite possibly one of the greatest RPG’s from the 16-bit era to not receive a worldwide release back in the 90’s. While Seiken Densetsu 3 felt very similar to the Secret of Mana game Square Enix made some notable improvements. In Seiken Densetsu 3 players have to option of choosing between six playable characters opposed to only three which was the case in the Secret of Mana. The playable characters in Seiken Densetsu 3 consisted of Charlotte, Hawkeye, Duran, Riesz, Kevin and Angela, Each character had their own separate story which ultimately connected to the main story. The cool thing about Seiken Densetsu 3 was that the characters that the players did not choose were relegated to being NPC’s.

Also, Seiken Densetsu 3 had it where single players could go through the story while having other two selected characters controlled by CPU. Seiken Densetsu 3 also allowed two player gameplay for the SNES which added to the overall fun factor of the game itself. With six main characters Seiken Densetsu 3 had multiple endings which added to the games replay value. The ability use magic spells while gaining experience points to improve character statistics made Seiken Densetsu 3 a very enjoyable RPG. The class system included in Seiken Densetsu 3 added depth to the game in terms of players being able to develop their characters. The story for Seiken Densetsu while simple was also very intriguing and involved rival factions wanting to possess the Mana Stones for their own personal agendas. The urge to have access to the Mana stones was the source of conflict between different factions in Seiken Densetsu 3. This game is one that could of been successful in America if it came out a few years sooner than it did. By 1995, causal gamers were starting to turn away from the SNES and started focusing on PS1 due to better quality and 3D graphics. If anything Seiken Densetsu 3 could have been a bigger attraction on the PS1 during the 90’s. Despite, how good Seiken Densetsu 3 was an RPG Square Enix had more popular games from that era like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI which had more commercial success in general. Despite, its lack of sales Seiken Densetsu 3 will always be considered an iconic JRPG’s from the 90’s that deserved way more love than it gets.
