Its hard to believe that Comix Zone came out on the Sega Genesis 30 years ago. Comix Zone was developed Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega and was one of the most underrated beat up titles from the 16-bit era. Comix Zone was a beat-em up game that was had a different look and vibe compared to titles from that genre pre-1995. Unlike, other games like Streets of Rage 2 the plot was more fantasy driven and focused on the main character Sketch Turner being sucked into his own comic book after it got struck by lightning. Comix Zone had six different levels with a post-apocalyptic setting with comic book aesthetics which looked somewhat similar to something you would see in a Viewtiful Joe game. Comix Zone was one of the most creative Sega games of the 90’s and its almost a tragedy that it never got an official sequel. At one point Sega was suppose to make a 3D successor for Comix Zone for the Sega Saturn but it never happened. Despite, Comic Zone being a cool game back in the day it was considered a commercial failure. Comix Zone was overshadowed by the Sonic games that came out on the Sega Genesis during the 90’s.

It should also be noted that by ’95 gamers were turning to the PS1 and Sega Saturn due to the rising popularity of 3D gaming. Comix Zone is a game that could have been more popular if it came out a few years sooner than it did. By the mid 90’s the beat em up genre was starting to lose its appeal and its something that negatively affected Comix Zone following its release. Despite, not being a massive commercial success Comix Zone had gained a cult following within the past three decades. There have been many gamers who wanted Sega to reboot the series for years and there has been rumors about a potential film adaptation being in works for the future. Comix Zone was one of those games that deserved to have its own series despite its commercial failure and many people have realized that over the years. While Sega obviously decided to focus more on the Sonic the Hedgehog series Comix Zone was an IP that had a ton of potential. A reboot of Comix Zone is something that would definitely turn heads within the gaming world. Even though, the landscape of gaming has changed significantly since the 90’s its still questionable on whether or not Comix Zone would be a major attraction in today’s generation compared to 1995.
