Its hard to believe that its been 15 years since the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I game came out. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I developed by Dimps and Sonic Team and published by Sega and released for multiple platforms including PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii along with various mobile devices. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I was a game that everyone was looking forward to prior to its release back in 2010 because it was Sega’s way of returning of the basics in relation to the Sonic franchise. After a series of lackluster 3D Sonic games Sega attempted to produce a video game that captured the magic of the original Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy from the early 90’s. The intro for Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I was the same was the first three Sonic games for the Sega Genesis and the gameplay was similar also. However, when it came to Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I we got 2D gameplay along with 3D graphics modernized graphics opposed to sprits and 16-bit pixel art. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I was a solid game depending on who you ask.

But there have been criticisms about Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I over the years including its lack of challenge and it being boring compared to the likes of Sonic 3 from 1994. The stages in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I felt like bland uninspired remakes of older stages but with different names. Also, the soundtrack that we got in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode was not nearly as iconic or memorable as the earlier entries that we got the Sega Genesis in the 90’s. Some of the boss battles in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I were clearly recycled from previous games and lacked originality. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I should have been better than it was; especially since it was supposed to be the 2D sequel to the Sonic & Knuckles game from 1994. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I should have been everything that Sonic Mania was in 2017 which was creative, exciting and bursting with nostalgia with modernized pixel art paying homage to the 16-bit era. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I is one of those entries within the Sonic series that many people have forgotten about in general because of its lack of depth. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I felt too bland and generic compared to Sonic 1-3 and Sonic Mania.
