Its hard to believe that it has been 25 years since Jet Set Radio appeared on Sega Dreamcast back in 2000. Jet Set Radio was developed the now defunct company known as Smilebit and published by Sega. Jet Set Radio was a pretty unique game mainly because there was no other title like it before the year 2000. Jet Set Radio was a game that featured a blend of different genres and action, sports along with platform gameplay. Jet Set Radio was a game that focused primarily on characters who are apart of a street gang. The main protagonist Beat along with the rest of his gang the GG’s engaged in activities like graffiti, skateboarding and rollerblading. Jet Set Radio was a game that combined extreme sports with teenage juvenile delinquency which is something that seemed pretty cool yet creative at the time. Jet Set Radio was a game that also had a pretty interesting story which involved the main character Beat and his gang trying to fight against a diabolical corporation that has taken control of their city. Along with having a main story Jet Set Radio the game had more than half a dozen playable characters along with different level types including Street, Rival Showdown and Trial.

The levels in Jet Set Radio mainly focuses on players using a selected character to tag other gang members or areas they previously used graffiti on. Jet Set Radio was a simple game to learn for casuals and perform tricks along earning graffiti points within certain time limits were among the main objectives of the game. Jet Set Radio was one of those games that had such a high replay value outside of the main story because it was a fun arcade like platform sports game. Despite, not being a massive commercial success Jet Set Radio still managed to reach at leas one million copies in terms of worldwide sales. Jet Set Radio was one of the few gems that Sega gave us before they stopped making their own game systems back in 2001. Despite, Jet Set Radio spawning a sequel in 2002 known as Jet Set Future on Xbox it game stilled ended up being a commercial failure despite earning outstanding reviews from gaming publications. Jet Set Radio is quite possibly one of Sega’s most underrated IP’s ever and the franchise deserves way more respect than it has received within the gaming community within the past 25 years. Jet Set Radio is a game that has developed a cult following over the past two decades and inspired the creation of games like OlliOlli World and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk from 2022-2023. The art-style and cel-shaded graphics for Jet Set Radio was ahead of its time making it standout from other video games that came out during the early 2000’s.
