Its hard to believe that its been more than 35 years since Sega started the After Burner series. After Burner became very popular in the late 80’s following its release in arcade centers on the Sega X Board. After Burner was very innovative for its time and came out during an era where the rail shooter genre had appealed to casual gamers. One of the main reasons why After Burner became so popular in countries like America back in the late 80’s and early 90’s was because of the design of the arcade cabinet itself. The flight stick control along with the cockpit design and the rotating sprites on the arcade screen added life to the gameplay experience of After Burner. Even though, we got an After Burner II for the Mega Drive it was something that was not talked about nearly as much as the original game. While rebooting the After Burner franchise sounds cool in theory it might not achieve the level of success as many people would think in this day and age. The rail-shooter genre has been dead for decades and After Burner has been irrelevant since the early 90’s. After Burner was one of those games that was great for its time because gaming was more about fun and entertainment in the 80’s along with a majority of the 90’s. Modern day gaming is more reality based and focuses more on real-life simulation opposed to arcade based gameplay. If anything After Burner would end up catering to a niche audience of hardcore gamers who are possibly in their 30’s-40’s. Even though, Sega has plans on reviving some of their older IP’s like Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Jet Set Radio, Comix Zone and others After Burner is something that was better off in arcade centers.
