Sonic R from 1997 is considered to be iconic despite all of the negative criticism aimed at its gameplay. While the gameplay for Sonic R was considered to be poor the OST was godly and is quite possibly the game’s most redeeming quality. Soundtracks like “Living In The City” and “Work it Out” really added life to Sonic R which was supposed to be Sega’s answer to Mario Kart back in the 90’s. The 3D graphics for Sonic R on Sega Saturn were dope despite the controls being slippery. The roster for Sonic R was small which was something that may have negatively affected the game. Also, Sonic R felt like 3D platform game with multiple character racing against each other on foot with the exception of Dr. Eggman and Amy Rose. In some ways Sonic R felt like a precursor to Sonic Adventure in relation to 3D level designs. However, Sega really should have taken the type to create an improved sequel to Sonic R for the Dreamcast console with more characters, better graphics, balanced controls and bigger levels. Despite, the Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing game from 2010 being better than Sonic R in terms of gameplay its not really a true sequel. If Sega or Sonic Team developed a Sonic R-2 or a spiritual successor to the original game from ’97 it would be something that would most likely attract a ton attention on social media. Another Sonic R game with the additions of characters like Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat and others would be cool. If Sega has no plans on making another Sonic R game that should at least consider rebooting the Sonic Riders series which has been dead since the late 2000’s.
