The original Need For Speed game from ’94 is considered to be legendary mainly because it was ahead of its time. Need For Speed came out for 3DO in late ’94 and did not come out on the original PlayStation and Microsoft Windows until around 1996. Need For Speed came out during a time period where the landscape of gaming was changing and the demand for 3D gameplay was increasing of among consumers. Need For Speed was one of the few titles that helped put the 3D racing genre on the map before Gran Turismo appeared on PS1 back in 1997. Despite, having no storyline or Career Mode could race head to head with their friends or CPU controlled opponents. The graphics for the game looked amazing by mid 90’s standards and it was one of those games that stood out during a time period where arcade racing titles were still popular. The Need For Speed game from ’94 had some nice touches which included real-life video footage and audio commentary which helped the overall quality of the game itself. The gameplay for Need For Speed was mainly presented in a first person perspective which made it feel different from the 2D arcade racing titles. While the original Need For Speed game seems very basic and generic by today’s standards its amazing to see what the series has become three decades later. Despite, not having the same level of success and popularity of Gran Turismo from ’97; EA’s Need For Speed ’94 game provided Sony with inspiration to create one of the greatest 3D racing franchises of all-time.
