When it comes down to legendary first person shooter games Doom ’93 was quite possibly one of the most popular titles of its era. Shortly, following the success of the original Doom game we got Doom II which was developed by id Software and released for MS-DOS and Macintosh 30 years ago back in 1994. Doom II was released years before the first person shooter genre became popular and its a game that many believe was ahead of its time. The gameplay for Doom II highly resembled that of its ’93 predecessor but took longer to complete. Doom II had around 32 different levels which were non-linear where players had to kill off as many demonic creatures as possible. Doom II featured bosses from the original ’93 game as regular enemies which felt a bit lazy.

The introduction of the Super Shotgun as a weapon along with bigger levels is something that added to the overall quality Doom II. Even though, Doom II did not receive an arcade release it still managed to sell roughly under 2 million copies during the mid 90’s. Despite, the success Doom II had following its release the game has received a certain degree of backlash because it was not a great as the original ’93 game. The maps in Doom II were not as good and the double shotgun did little to compensate for the lack of innovation and creativity it had. Doom II came out literally a decade for Doom 3 did which was 2004 and its a game that looks inferior mainly due to graphical limitations. Doom II is something that should have been saved for the PlayStation 2 era since it would of allowed the developers to do more in terms of gameplay.
