Earthbound is one of the most underrated and iconic RPG titles to have emerge from the 90’s decade. Earthbound was released 30 years ago back in ’94 and since then it has received a cult following from the gaming community within the past few decades. Earthbound was co-developed by Ape Inc. and Hal Laboratory and published by Nintendo and it looked and felt different compared to all the other RPG titles that appeared on the SNES during the early to mid 90’s. Earthbound had a very intriguing plot that involved Ness and his friends trying to save the world from aliens known as Giygas. The Giygas had the ability to transform human beings into vicious creatures through hatred and were vulnerable to prayer which was something that might be looked at as controversial today considering how much society has changed. Its no secret that Earthbound had some religious undertones back in ’94 which was no big deal in America back in the day.

Mother 2 was also seemed darker than it should have been despite being video game that targeted children. Despite, how dark Earthbound was it paled in comparison to Mother 3 from 2006 which is quite possibly one of the most controversial video games that Nintendo has ever published. Mother 2 a.k.a Earthbound was a game that deserved more exposure despite not being a best seller for the SNES during the 90’s. In fact, the Mother series is an IP that fans have wanted Nintendo to revive for the past two decades mainly because how good Mother 3 was. Even though, Mother 2 was felt kinda weird and cartoonish and had wacky dialogue it ended up being a better game than it was initially given credit for following its release 30 years ago. It should also be noted that Earthbound is almost impossible to find in a used video game store in America because its one of those JRPG’s that contrasts almost anything that you would see in a contemporary RPG title. Three decades later Earthbound still has a cult following within the gaming community and even inspired the creation of fan made games like Oddity which was never officially released. Ironically, the Oddity game revealed back in 2020 was originally supposed to be Mother 4 but the idea eventually ended up being scrapped for whatever reason. Even though, Nintendo may never bring back the Mother series the Earthbound game from ’94 will always be considered a legendary JRPG from the 90’s.
