Its been 20 years Def Jam: Fight For NY was released for the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox and its still one of the most popular fighting titles of the 2000’s. While Def Jam: Icon from 2007 was considered to be an embarrassment in comparison to Fight For NY many people still believe that Electronic Arts should have created a spiritual successor to the first two entries from 2003-2004. Def Jam: Fight For NY was one of the most unique fighting games of its time because it took elements of hip-hop, street fighting and pro wrestling and mixed them all into one. Def Jam: Fight For NY gave us high profile hip hop artists along with their licensed soundtracks along with the ability for players to create and customize their characters. Def Jam: Fight For NY was also heavily story driven and was one of the few “M” rated fighting titles that was almost as addictive as Mortal Kombat in relation to violence. A Def Jam: Fight For NY inspired game is something that would definitely turn heads in the gaming world if Electronic Arts ever decides to release on in the future. However, the fighting genre of gaming along with hip hop in general is not nearly as popular as it was back in the 2000’s decade. A Def Jam inspired fighting game featuring modern day pop stars or celebrities is something that would be interesting but it seems very unlikely to happen in the future.
