Captain Commando is quite possibly one of Capcom’s least talked about IP’s in relation to video games. For those who do not know the Captain Commando game was a beat em up from ’91 that has been almost completely forgotten about within the past two decades or so. Captain Commando was released as a multiplayer arcade title that allowed up to four players and at one point was one of Capcom’s hottest video titles. Captain Commando is more than three decades old and Capcom never really did anything with the franchise despite how popular the ’91 game was. While Captain Commando did appear as a playable character in Marvel vs Capcom from ’98 and Marvel vs Capcom 2 from 2000 he did not connect with the casual audience of gamers. As the 90’s progressed teenagers and young adults became more interested in blood and violence and began to despise video game characters with heroic personas. During the 90’s, 2000’s and even the 2010’s more people especially in America became more fond of anti-heroes or prefer video games that are more strategy based and heavily storyline driven. Also, the beat em up genre had pretty much died after the early 90’s along with the fact that Captain Commando did not earn Capcom any major profits like the Street Fighter series did back in the day. In this day and age Capcom has no need to bring back Captain Commando seeing how popular some of their current franchises are such as: Monster Hunter, Resident Evil and Street Fighter. Captain Commando is less popular and irrelevant than Mega Man and there is really no point on rebooting a franchise that no one has talked about for 30 years.
