This past year was not necessarily a great year for Square Enix to say the very least. Not only did Square Enix lose more than $2 billion in 2023 but Final Fantasy XVI ended up being a commercial disappointment thus far. Even though, Final Fantasy XVI was praised by various critics the sales were not as strong as FFXV from 2016. While FFXVI was heavily hyped before its release back in June 2023 it seems like Octopath Traveler II had quickly became an afterthought following its release early last year. The original Octopath Traveler game from 2018 was very popular and it stood out for its 2D-HD sprites and designs which paid homage to the 16-bit era from the 90’s. Octopath Traveler II most likely would have stood more in 2022 since 2023 was a year full of high profile RPG releases. There is no way Octopath Traveler II could have competed with the likes of Baldur’s Gate 3, Diablo IV or Hogwarts Legacy in terms of popularity. Octopath Traveler II did not get the same type of mainstream attention that its prequel got a few years ago but it still managed to sell over one million copies worldwide. Octopath Traveler was one of Square Enix’s top video games of 2023 along with Final Fantasy XVI but neither game brought in the type of revenue the company had expected.
