Chrono Trigger from ’95 is widely considered as one of the most legendary RPG’s in video game history. Chrono Trigger has received nothing but praise since its release almost 30 years ago and its a title that should have spawned an entire video game series. While Chrono Trigger did get a direct sequel for original PlayStation console back in ’99 the game sold poorly despite great the game itself was. At one point Chrono Cross was supposed to get a sequel quite possibly for the PlayStation 2 during the 2000’s known as Chrono Break before it was eventually cancelled. Ever since the cancellation of Chrono Break the closest thing we got to a sequel was a fan made online project title called Chrono Resurrection back in 2004. The Chrono Resurrection project was eventually abandoned due to Square Enix sending a cease and desist letter for copyright infringement leaving the gaming community unable to play the game online. Since then it seems like Square Enix has completely forgot about the Chrono series mainly because the Final Fantasy series was more popular during the 2000’s and 2010’s decades. However, the latest Final Fantasy game FFXVI feel way below Square Enix’s desired expectations following the commercial failures of games like Forspoken and Marvel’s Avengers. It was reported back in September 2023 that Square Enix lost $2 billion following the release of Final Fantasy XVI months earlier in June. The idea of reviving an old IP’s that casual gamers are more familiar with like Chrono Trigger would sound like great idea for Square Enix right now. Despite, the Chrono series not being nearly as popular the Final Fantasy franchise a new entry would be something that would turn heads within the gaming world. Prior to 2020 Sega’s Streets of Rage series had been dead since the mid 90’s and its latest entry ended up being their best one profit wise. It quite possible that a reboot of the Chrono series is something that could be beneficial to Square Enix especially considering how popular RPG’s are today in comparison to the 90’s and early 2000’s. A new Chrono Trigger game is something that Square Enix should definitely consider in relation to the 2020’s decade.
