China’s new regulations regarding video games is something that has been appearing almost everywhere on the web especially considering the detrimental effect that it has on corporations like Tencent. For those who do not know Tencent is a technology conglomerate that has been around since ’98 and has been one of the most profitable companies in China for over the past two decades. It seems like everything has been going great for Tencent until Chinese authorities announced their plans to curb both access and spending on video games within China. The result of these new rules and regulations made by Chinese authorities has caused Tencent’s stock to take a massive hit leading to the conglomerate to lose more than $43 billion in the process. While Chinese authorities have considered revising the new rules and regulations they placed on gaming activities within China due the amount of money Tencent lost; their endgame is to limit the access the minors have to video games on a daily bases while preventing addictive behavior that could involve the likes of gambling. There is no secret that gacha games have been highly controversial for quite sometime now not just in China but in other countries around the world such as America. In fact, it was reported back in Spring 2023 that Nintendo was facing a lawsuit regarding Mario Kart: World Tour due to its gacha game features which targeted minors. While China is making an attempt to do the right thing in relation to cracking down on gacha gaming limiting the amount of hours a day that minors have access to video games seems a bit excessive in the eyes of some people.
