Its hard to believe that its been over 30 years since the first Ecco the Dolphin was released for the Sega Genesis back in 1992. Ecco the Dolphin was a pretty unique action-adventure game for its time that stood out during the 16-bit era during the early 90’s. Ecco the Dolphin was a game that many people had nothing but good things to say about other than the fact that it was somewhat scary at times. Aside from the original ’92 game we got to see other installments within the Ecco series throughout the 90’s. We got to see Ecco: Tides of Time and Ecco Jr during ’94-’95 while getting Ecco the Dolphin: Defenders of the Future in 2000. We have not seen an Ecco the Dolphin game in over 20 years mainly because the landscape of gaming had changed during the 2000’s in relation to genre preference. During the 2000’s the shooter genre was very popular and people gravitated to more adult themed action adventure titles. Also, during the 2010’s action role-playing games started to become more popular in general along with online multiplayer video games. Its common knowledge that Sega plans on reviving old IP’s from 90’s including Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Crazy Taxi and others. Seeing a new Ecco the Dolphin game would be something that would turn heads within the gaming world but its uncertain on whether or not that is on Sega’s agenda at the moment.
