It seems like 2023 has been a crazy year for Ubisoft to say the very least especially with all of the negative publicity the video game developer has received this year. In October 2023 we learned that five ex-employees from Ubisoft has been arrested for sexual harassment that took place in the years prior to 2023 following the lawsuit from France over such issues in relation to their workplace. Along with the controversy surrounding Ubisoft’s toxic workplace we have recently learned that Ubisoft had just announced that the company cut over 100 different jobs within the VFX and IT departments.
In response to cutting roughly around 124 Ubisoft stated “Over the past few months, every team within Ubisoft has been exploring ways to streamline our operations and enhance our collective efficiency so that we are better positioned for success in the long term.” Ubisoft also said that “These are not decisions taken lightly, and we are providing comprehensive support for our colleagues who will be leaving Ubisoft during this transition. We also want to share our utmost gratitude and respect for their many contributions to the company. This restructuring does not affect our production teams.”
These layoffs from Ubisoft most likely does not come as a surprise to anyone especially considering the fact that they axed at least 60 customer service positions back in May 2023. Even though, the release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage was massive success this year and gave Ubisoft positive publicity since early October 2023; the company is most likely going to do everything they can to cut costs left and right especially considering how turbulent the world economy is right now.
